Lent Program 2006 - Called to follow the Son

To the people of the Wollongong Diocese who are preparing for the Vocations Congress

My dear Brothers and Sisters,

Lent is like a time of retreat for the whole Church. In the light of Jesus Christ’s way, truth and life, you and I are invited to do a direction check on where our lives are heading, as the Word of God calls us to
repent of our sins (Acts 1:38), make reparation and try to treat others as we would like to be treated (Matthew 7:12).

As Lent prepares us to focus on the central “Mystery of Faith” —God saving us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ—this season also off ersus a unique opportunity to look seriously at how we respond to God’s call at our baptism to be a disciple of Jesus. As a member of a small faith-sharing Lenten group, you will gather weekly with others during these Lenten days to grow in faith, hope and love. Others may reflect on this program individually, sharing with God in prayer. I invite you to be open to the process of growth that comes from such sharing. Be open to the gift of holiness. Take responsibility for your own participation and please encourage others to take part so the entire group benefits and grows together.

I thank Richard McMahon, Diocesan Coordinator of Adult Faith formation, who prepared the reflections for this program. I thank Fr David Catterall, Deacon Richard Healey and the staff of the Curia Office for their work in bringing this program to birth.
I firmly hope and pray that your gatherings during this Lenten Season will help you experience the promise of Christ; ‘Where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them.’ (Matthew 18:20) As you realise, through your discussion and prayer in common, that all of us—whether married or single, ordained or consecrated religious—have a vocation, may you come to appreciate that it is in a living relationship with Jesus that we find our meaning and our strength. “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)

May the celebration of our Diocesan Vocations Congress, of which this Lenten program is a special part, help us to take seriously the invitation of Jesus: “Remain in my love.” (John 15:9)

Yours sincerely in Christ,
Most Rev Peter Ingham DD
Bishop of Wollongong
